The notions of heroes both super and ordinary have inspired two very different projects. The projects were driven by questions asked about what constitutes a hero. Attempting to bypass the highly paid sportsman or latest celebrity the idea was to look at more traditional notions.
The first project, 'Desktop Heroes' takes a look at the average Joe who has acted out of the ordinary and in doing so has become a momentary hero. Selected from a search of the BBC News website, these heroes were chosen within a strict set of parameters.
A key tenant was that they had done something above and beyond their natural boundaries, and that made a tangible difference.
The project further examines how quickly we cast aside these passing heroes and how quickly we forget.
The second project, 'Marvel' (pictured) explores, through furniture, the notion of super heroes. Attempting to develop an alternative depiction of the comic book heroes of our youth and what they symbolise. Filmed experiments and play depicting Superheroes was utilised to develop fluid pieces that capture the powerful motions and the allure that surrounds these escapist experiences. The furniture ekes out the hope fuelled escapism of our youth.
